I enjoyed a wonderful bike ride from the heart of Dublin to Rosslare in 1996. The weather was superb. Climbing the Wicklow Mountains was tough but the views made it so worthwhile. I fell in love with Wexford as it celebrated its team's place in the GAA cup final. Ireland is definitely one of the world's best cycle touring destinations. After Wales, of course!

I've had four good cycling holidays in Ireland and would like to go again. But bikes are often roughly handled on airways; ferries much better (if operating!), but impossibility of booking bikes on trains makes planning difficult. Some cross-country trains won't carry bikes at all, others will not take advance bookings in case there's no space. These are serious deterrents to planning a cycling holiday.

I have cycled in Ireland many years ago and loved it. But this summer I could not get a feery from Liverpool to Dublin that was willing to take a bicycle--in fact they told they simply didi not book bicycles. So I am spending 3 weeks in France instead.

A few years ago we cycled from Shannon back to Dublin. The people were fabulous but many roads were in an awful patched state. My advice is make sure you take a mountain bike!!
