I was working on something similar until I was sidetracked by the American Lawbreaking article in Salon. It annoys me that for most mainstream media, bicycling safety begins and ends with an admonition to wear a helmet. It's like handing the keys to a new teenage driver and saying, "Be sure to buckle your seat belt. Now you're safe!" And don't get me started about Faux News, brought to us from a network that acts as the mouthpiece for the Republican party in its news programming, yet makes the bulk of its money from prime time programming offering sex, sex, sex, sex, innuendo, and did I mention sex? There's a fundamental disconnect between their viewer demographics. Oh, dammit! I went off on Faux News anyway! ...and my thanks to Fritz for directing me to your post. Lovely piece, Carlton. And it's a crying shame. Instead of promoting cycling as a life-enhancing activity, a relatively safe transport mode (driving is dangerous, too), the 'safety' angle is used instead. The fact is, the more cyclists out there, the safer it gets for cycling, with or without helmets. I ride with a helmet but I feel slightly guilty that I'm promoting the fact cycling, in rare circumstances, can be less than safe. By rights, we should all drive our cars wearing full-face helmets and wear fire-retardant suits because these would save us in the event of a bad smash, but we don't, and driving is perceived to be 'safe as houses'. You're preaching to the choir here -- too bad the people who need to hear this message ain't hearing it. In the U.S., a percentage of transportation funding is require by law to go to "Safe Routes to School" and a percentage of that must go to safety education, safety programs and promotion. Unfortunately, a very large portion of education is limited to 'wear a helmet to be safe' and a big chunk of promotion is limited to handing out free bike helmets. As if. Good stuff, Carlton.
