DWI penalties...

Good stuff all around, in particular I like the way the topic stays within the niche and not go jumping all around on irrelevant things....

The 'regulars' I see on my daily commute are seldom a bother. I'm just another guy going to work. But the worst motorists I run into are around the Baptist Retirement Village, where tiny old people drive enormous cars (sans tailfins these days) by looking through the steering wheel, and near our high school. Teenagers like to share insights from their months of driving experience.

One street is under construction, being widened to 4 lanes from the present 2 lane configuration. The zone is about a mile long and the speed limit has bee reduced to 20 mph. I'm interested to see whether the narrow road combined with a slower speed causes motorists to become even more annoyed when a cyclist rides ahead of them. This is hardly a scientific study, of course, but it may be instructive.

The icthus symbol means the same thing here, too. Although not as well known to those 'not in the know.'
I've been cut up by icthus-drivers lots of times and I think 'Hmm, that wasn't very Christian, was it.'
However, not all will be Christians. Some folks, driving the car secondhand, might not have removed the icthus, thinking it was a go-faster performance badge, like GTi or something!
One of the things that gets me about Mr Toads is that they need not be young blokes. Grannies and, indeed, nuns can be very Mr Toadish. And it's getting worse. Here in the UK there's less and less road space and this is making motorists furious.

What is it about encountering a cyclist on the road that turns otherwise sane people into raging idiots? Is it the car itself? Is it our over-blown expectations of freedom and mobility supposedly conferred by motor vehicle ownership? Or do cyclists themselves radiate some kind of hostility inducing geek ray?

I was once run off the road by a carload of nuns. And on an otherwise lovely Sunday morning, a motorist blared his horn and flipped me off as he went by, only to reveal the 'magic Jesus fish' sticker on his rear bumper (denoting a born-again Christian on this side of the pond).

It's a puzzlement.
